The use of portraits in editorial and documentary work is a standard tool utilised by all photographers. The practice allows you to study the subject and lift from reality something of the person and save it as a record. The addition or otherwise of background can add further to the information that is/can be loaded in to a photographic image. I enjoy making portraits, they are special moments shared uniquely between the photographer and the subject. You have to try hard and ensure you are really seeing and as always one has to be respectful and as honest as the camera will let you be.
